Common questions

The app will not connect to my adapter

Make sure the adapter is pushed all the way into the OBD-II port and its light is on, and that the ignition is on. Check that Bluetooth is turned on and that SmartOBD is allowed to use it in Settings on your iPhone. Then try again from the app. If it still will not connect, email us with the adapter's make and model.

Where is the OBD-II port?

On most cars it is under the dashboard on the driver's side, near the steering column. On some it is behind a small cover or near the center console.

Does it work on my car?

If your car was sold in the US as a 1996 model or newer, it has an OBD-II port and SmartOBD can read its check engine codes.

Which adapter should I use?

A Bluetooth OBD-II adapter, such as one from OBDLink. No adapter yet? Turn on demo mode in Settings to try every feature with a simulated car.

Is it a replacement for a mechanic?

No. The answers and costs are estimates, not quotes. Confirm the diagnosis with a mechanic before you pay for a repair, and never work on the high voltage parts of a hybrid or electric car. See the terms for the full safety notes.

The AI mechanic says I hit a limit

Each phone gets a set number of AI diagnoses and follow up messages each month, plus a short limit on how many you can send in a few minutes. Wait a few minutes, or until the next month, and try again. Your saved scans are still there.

What data leaves my phone?

Your scan history and notes stay on your phone. When you use the AI mechanic, your scan goes to our server and to Anthropic, the AI provider, to write the answer. The privacy policy has the details.

How do I delete my scans?

Press and hold a scan in History to delete it, or delete them all from Settings. To ask us to delete what is on our server, email contact@pileupdigital.com.
